About my work

I work with paper, metalwork prints and woodcuts. Always in black and white, with all the nuances in between.

My paper works consist of collage and drawing. I build up the images with remnants of graphic sheets, using the tones from the different papers. In my drawings, pencil, chalk and ink provide the details, while I simplify the elements of the landscape and play with light, shadow and lines. The motifs are inspired by winter landscapes, trees and rivers, and I use horizontal and vertical lines to create a resonance in the work. The eye reads the landscape in layers, and I try to achieve a sense of wholeness.

Metalwork prints

I work with both copper and zinc. It is simple and direct. The motifs are landscapes, often the same as in the collages. Here too, it is the simplification and the relationship between dark and light that engages me. I use various techniques such as drypoint, sandpaper, steel wool, mezzotint and roulette. The plates wear quickly so all the prints are slightly different. I use all kinds of black ink, both oil- and water-based.

Woodcuts

The possibilities and limitations of wood fascinate and inspire. You must work within the boundaries of the wood. Wood is a living material. You must respect the direction of the grain and the hardness of the material. As a rule, I work with pine plywood. This is coarse and soft. The growth lines are visible. The direction matters as it tends to splinter. The tools are coarse and sharp. But anything that leaves a mark can be used.
